Bowen Island Nexwléléxwm Water & Topography
Basics
Title
Bowen Island Nexwléléxwm Water & Topography
Description
A comprehensive topographic and hydrological map of Bowen Island showing water resources, watersheds, streams, lakes, wetlands, elevation contours, major peaks and summits, coastal features, and water supply catchments. The map includes a detailed legend distinguishing fish-bearing and non-fish-bearing streams, surface water supply areas, points of water diversion (dams and intakes), and major water supply catchments. The map provides 3D perspective inset views from northeast to southwest and south to north, showing the island's mountainous terrain. Geographic features are labeled including Mount Collins, Mount Gardner, Grafton Lake, Killarney Lake, Josephine Lake, and numerous bays and coastal points. The map uses a UTM NAD 83 EPSG 26910 projection with a coordinate grid in 1-kilometer increments at a scale of 1:18,625.

Key Findings
This map provides a comprehensive view of Bowen Island's water resources and topography, identifying critical watershed areas, water supply catchments, stream systems (both fish-bearing and non-fish-bearing), lakes, wetlands, and major topographic features. The map identifies six numbered water supply catchment areas: 1) Head Point/Grafton Bay, 2) Eagle Cliff, 3) Cove Bay, 4) Josephine Lake (also Locks #3), 5) Fairweather & Josephine Creek, and 6) Lee Creek. Ten points of water diversion including dams and intakes are marked, and chlorinated community water supply areas are delineated. The terrain shows significant elevation changes with Mount Gardner and Mount Collins being prominent peaks, and the island's complex stream network supporting salmon and trout populations in lower reaches.
Methodology
The map was created using TRIM data licensed from DataBC (Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Environment), cadastre data from Government of BC (www.data.gov.bc.ca), hydrology data from Bowen Island Groundwater Hydrology Project by Varga & Associates, terrestrial data from Vegetation Inventory by Madrone Environmental Services, Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, Integrated Hydrological Model by BC Hydro, Jones & Stanton (1993), and background terrain data from Pacific Northwest Vascular catalog with contributions from Allen Woodliffe, Boyce, Lim Marine, Bill Merilees, and WSP Harvey.
Map Descriptions
Page 1: Main topographic and hydrological map of Bowen Island displaying relief shading showing mountainous terrain with prominent peaks including Mount Collins and Mount Gardner. The map shows detailed water features including streams (both fish-bearing in darker blue and non-fish-bearing in lighter blue), lakes (Grafton Lake, Killarney Lake, Hidden Lake, Josephine Lake shown in cyan), and wetlands (shown in green). Major water supply catchments are highlighted in tan/yellow. The coastline is clearly delineated with labeled bays including Hood Point, Stormaway Bay, Tunstall Bay, Browns Bay, Bluewater Bay, Eagle Harbour, and Cape Roger Curtis. A coordinate grid system divides the map into sections labeled A-J horizontally and 1-9 vertically.
|Inset 1 (upper left): 3D perspective view from northeast to southwest showing the island's topographic relief with labeled features including Tunstall Bay, Grafton Lake, Snug Cove, Hummock Pinnacle, Eagle Cliff, and Cape Roger Curtis.
|Inset 2 (middle left): 3D perspective view from south to north displaying the island's mountain profile with labeled features including Cape Roger Curtis, Mount Collins, Fairweather, Snug Cove, and Mount Gardner.
|Inset 3 (lower right): Small locator map showing Bowen Island's position within the broader regional context including its relationship to Howe Sound and the Greater Vancouver area, with major water supply catchments highlighted in yellow and brown; scientific advisors Will Husby, Jeff Matheson, Bob Turner, and Alan Whitehead. Scale, projection, and disclaimer information are included at the bottom. Contact information for the cartographer (jdowler@cosmicidea.com) is provided.
